Formerly referred to as Eucharistic Ministers, Extra-ordinary Ministers of Communion serve the parish community they belong to by either or both of the following:
a.) by assisting the priest and deacon at Mass in the distribution of Holy Communion.
b.) by bringing Holy Communion to parishioners confined to their homes, in hospitals, nursing homes and assisted-living facilities.
HOW DO THEY BECOME EXTRA-ORDINARY MINISTERS?
Recommended by the pastor, they are appointed by the Bishop for a period of (3) three years. At the end of the three-year appointment, if willing, they can/may be appointed for another term.
